Founded in 2002 Act of Life, Inc. is a registered 501 (c) (3) non-profit charitable organization. In 2002, Julie Stobbe had a vision. She realized that she had a story to tell about her own adoption, and that her story could inspire others to realize the beauty of adoption as a parenting choice. And so Act of Life was born.
Julie knew that crisis pregnancy centers played a crucial role in society as a first point of contact for many women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, and she researched the adoption knowledge and counseling techniques that were being used with these women. The results were astonishing. Not only did many pregnancy centers not know how to present adoption as one of the three parenting choices, but many counselors had their own personal thoughts on adoption, influenced by external factors, which affected their ability to talk about adoption in an objective manner. Julie realized the impact this would have on a parenting decision and developed the mission of Act of Life to educate, encourage and equip those touched by adoption, the professionals who serve them, and society in general.
Armed with the knowledge that counselors are better able to present adoption as a viable parenting choice when they are educated, encouraged, and equipped with the facts about adoption, Julie developed our unique biblically based adoption training programs that are part of today’s bore business for Act of Life. Understanding the similarities between physical adoption, and our spiritual adoption through Jesus Christ into God’s family, enables us to really grasp the adoption concept.
As more and more pregnancy centers recognize the importance of understanding God’s heart for adoption, and attend our training programs, so we continue to grow and broaden our outreach into new areas. Recognized by national organizations such as Focus on the Family, Alliance for Children, Homes with Hope, Pregnancy Help Center of West Houston, Generations Adoption Agency, and Gracewood, Act of Life is truly becoming a national adoption awareness ministry. We are also expanding not only in training, but also advocacy and counseling. We serve those agencies involved with adoption, pregnant women who have an unplanned pregnancy, couples wanting to adopt to expand their family, and for anybody or any agency that advocates adoption as a parenting choice.
We offer different programs. First of all, we train our volunteers to be advocates, able to talk about adoption in different settings and advancing adoption awareness. We also train our volunteers as counselors. We offer four different programs. The Options program presents the options to pregnant women with unplanned pregnancies. The Life Choice program offers support to birthmothers and family members during the experience of child placement through adoption. The New Beginnings program offers support to any woman who has chosen abortion. The Hope program offers support to couples interested in expanding their family through adoption.
